The Driver CPC Information
What does the driver CPC mean for me as a professional driver?
- Driver CPC is being introduced across Europe to maintain high driving Driver standards and improve road safety.
- Driver CPC is Driver Certificate of Professional Competence
- CPC is compulsory for PSV drivers from September 2008, LGV drivers September 2009
- Any LGV drivers of 3.5t GVW and upwards must complete their drivers CPC
35 hours of training must be completed every 5 years broken down into 7 hour modules.
- There is a cost to the drivers or employers to complete the required training.
- We can base the modules on issues specific to your industry and your needs.
Through continuous training in the form of the Driver CPC, Ernie Best in association with Pride Training (UK) Ltd aim to ensure:
- Drivers are kept up to date with any changes in legislation.
- Drivers are qualified to carry out their duties.
- Drivers are aware of their personal responsibilities to safety, professionalism, other road users and their employers.
- All legal and statutory requirements for drivers are met by both the individual and the employers.
- Be a professional and efficient driver.
- Providing you have passed your PCV test prior to September 2008 and LGV test prior to September 2009 your current licence gives you “grandfather rights” to drive the vehicles on your licence.
- Upon completion of a 7 hour module of training you will be issued with a certificate and your progress stored on DVLA website.
- Upon completion of your 35 hours training over the 5 year period you will receive a Drivers CPC card automatically from DVLA.
- Your Divers CPC Qualification last 5 years and so the training will be an ongoing process refreshing your drivers needs and keeping you up to date with changes to drivers legislation.
- If you change companies or complete training modules with different trainers, your progress is stored centrally with DVLA and so your training records will travel with you and still be recorded with your licence details.
We are be able to quote a “day rate” rather than a rate per individual driver
Drivers could get together with other drivers or with a local operator who has only a few drivers to take advantage of the day rate fee and to increase their control over what is delivered and when it is delivered.

Who requires the driver CPC
Any driver of goods vehicles over 3.5 tons and drivers of minibuses with 9 seats or more are covered by Driver CPC.
Driver CPC will enable young people to enter these sectors in a safe and professional manner, from 18 years of age, subject to any licence restrictions for category D drivers.
The existing ‘Transport Manager’s CPC’ also known as the ‘Operator’s CPC’ is a separate qualification and anyone holding one, who still drives professionally as part of their job, will also need to hold a Driver CPC.
There are a number of Driver CPC exemptions. These are listed below:
- Vehicles with a maximum speed not exceeding 45 Kph
- Vehicles used by the armed forces, civil defence, and emergency services
- Vehicles undergoing road tests for technical development, repair or maintenance
- Vehicles used in states of emergency
- Vehicles used in the course of driving lessons or examinations
- Vehicles used for non-commercial carriage of passenger or goods – for personal use
- Vehicles used for carrying material or equipment to be used by the driver in the course of his or her work, providing that driving the vehicles is not the drivers’ principle activity
It is up the driver and their employer to decide if they are covered by these exemptions, and if necessary, justify it to the competent authority.
